One Man, One Mountain, One Family Milestone to Conquer
On June 8, 2015, I had the honor of being interviewed by Lauren Landau as part of a "milestones" feature on WAMU's program, Metro Connection. The show aired June 12 and 13 on 88.5 FM, American University Radio. Give it a listen.

Trips of a Lifetime Lecture Series
On Sept 14, 2015 I had the pleasure of giving a PowerPoint presentation about my trip to a small but enthusiastic audience as part of the Shaw Library's "Trips of a Lifetime" lecture series. Click the Contact tab at the top of this page if you'd like to discuss the possibility of my doing a similar presentation for a group that you represent.

Sierra Club
Our nation's most venerable and preeminent conservation organization, founded by John Muir in 1892. I've been a proud, card-carrying member since 1993.

Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project
Since 2003, KPAP has striven to improve working conditions for Kilimanjaro porters by lending out mountaineering clothing and gear, by providing free classes in English, money management, and disease prevention, and by educating the broader public about the true conditions under which Kilimanjaro porters labor. If you decide to climb K-man one day, please hire an outfitter that is approved by KPAP.

Founded by photographer Nick Brandt and conservationist Richard Bonham, the Big Life Foundation coordinates cross-border anti-poaching operations. What Does it Mean to be Human?
Curated by the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History, this online exhibit is perhaps the most comprehensive website available on the subject of human origins. Don't even think about going to East Africa without first doing a little surfing in these educational waters. Can't tell the difference between Australopithecus africanus and Paranthropus boisei? Then try this interactive family tree from the website.

Doctors Without Borders
My favorite charity organization, DWB sends doctors, nurses, and medical supplies to some of the poorest people in some of the most remote, war-torn, and otherwise dangerous places in the world. They have no political or religious agenda. Just compassion.

Outward Bound
If you want to get outside and really test yourself, these folks will oblige. The wilderness is their classroom, and you are the curriculum. Since the mid-1990s I've participated in almost a dozen Outward Bound expeditions as either a student, an instructor, or as a chaperone for my middle school students. I have yet to encounter a student who didn't agree that his or her Outward Bound expedition was a life-altering experience.

Wilderness Medical Associates
Anyone who travels regularly in remote areas ought to consider some wilderness medical training. And by "remote areas" I mean anywhere farther than one hour from an emergency room. (Yeah, that widens the net a bit, doesn't it?) Monica and I have been certified and re-certified as Wilderness First Responders many times over by several different organizations, and in my opinion, WMA is the best of the bunch.

People are Complicated
